Beautiful Los Gatos cuddles up to the Santa Cruz Mountains’ green foothills like a cat, for which the town is named (Gato means cat in Spanish). Los Gatos is one of Santa Clara County’s oldest communities, with a population of about 28,850 residents living in a 14 square-mile area. Los Gatos residents pride themself on being a “self-contained community” that strives to keep it’s “small town” feel.
Situated at the Santa Clara Valley’s Southwest edge, the Town of Los Gatos is one of Silicon Valley’s most desirable places to live. The downtown shopping area, located along Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street, looks like a classic American small town from a Norman Rockwell painting. There are unique stores and fine restaurants here that draw customers from all over the Bay Area. Not only does the lovely downtown have nice stores and restaurants but also has many sidewalk cafes, clothing stores, luxury hotels, antique shops, art galleries, and even a small movie theater.
Walking through downtown is a great experience on any given day. Great people, great food and great window shopping. Don’t forget to check out the exotic car dealerships located right in downtown Los Gatos. There you will find a Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari, and a Lamborghini dealership.
The neighborhoods have immaculately-maintained Victorian homes. But despite its appearance as a Midwestern small town, it’s an up-scale area, with sky-high housing prices, one of the most expensive in the Silicon Valley, which makes it one of the most expensive in the United States. Many of Silicon Valley’s CEOs, sports celebrities and other famous people choose to call Los Gatos their home town. Its charms and beauty have long attracted famous residents, from writers John Steinbeck and Jack London to computer inventor Steve Wozniak, painter of light Thomas Kinkade, 49ers football star Alex Smith and Olympic skater Peggy Fleming.
Los Gatos is a perfect place for someone with an active lifestyle. There are many summer concerts in downtown Los Gatos and other areas. Don’t miss the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Town Plaza Park. Vasona Lake County Park is a clean and wonderful family park with a carousel and train rides available each weekend. Play structures at Vasona are great. In addition to the usual swings and climbing play structures there is a child size Train, Old Fashioned Fire Truck, and a cool Jet Fighter Plane kids love to play on. Fishing and boating is also available and there are many biking and jogging trails in and around Lake Vasona. Bring your bikes!
A short 20-minute drive through the Santa Cruz Mountains’ redwoods brings you to the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. A 15-minute drive in the other direction will take you to downtown San Jose, Capital of Silicon Valley or the San Jose Norman Mineta International Airport.
